Orthopaedic Travelling Fellowship
Since 1988, the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM), the
Asia Pacific Orthopaedic Association (APOA), formerly known as the Western Pacific
Orthopaedic Association (WPOA), and the European Society of Sports Traumatology
Knee Surgery and Arthroscopy (ESSKA), have fostered scientific and cultural
exchanges among sports medicine orthopaedic surgeons in North America, the Pacific
Rim and Europe, through the travelling fellowship programme.
Each year, three newly qualified and promising, young orthopaedic sports medicine specialists
are selected to visit a number of the leading sports medicine centers from the
exchange area, for a three week period. A "Godparent", who is a well-known
senior orthopaedic sports medicine specialist from the visiting region, accompanies the
group.
A reciprocal arrangement is available for an Orthopaedic Surgeon from NZ to
be selected as a Travelling Fellow to visit North America, the Pacific Rim or
Europe, approximately every three years.
